Once Bitten
Prologue: PAUL
The freeway was dimly lit as we drove down the road in Dads SUV. Mum was fast asleep while he handled the wheel. My younger sister, Pele, and I sat dozing in the back seat. We were only an hours drive away from home, he figured he could stay up until then. The freeway appeared empty that night. We rounded a bend. Out of nowhere a huge log truck came barreling around the corner straight for us. Driving on the wrong side of the road, its bright white headlights blinding us.
Instinctively I wrapped myself protectively around Pele, shielding her from harm. The truck hit like a train. It ripped us from the road and

KNOCK. KNOCK.
I open my eyes sleepily. I am lying in bed on my side facing the window, my body curled up into the foetal position. I feel my boyfriend's warm body behind me, our legs overlapping one another, his arm protectively holding me and making me feel safe. I can hear him breathing deeply. He is fast asleep. My George. I slowly sit up so as not to wake him, reach for my phone and touc
You
Yes, you, beautiful soul that reaches for the stars with a twinkle in your eyes and doesn't settle for less than your dreams.
You, the hurt and beaten but unbroken spirit,
That refuses to fall.
Keep standing.
The winds may blow, the world may shake, the skies thunder, the universe burn.
But you will give it your all.
In your confined and limited world, your tree, your room, town, or continent, you may feel scarred. Weakened.
There is only so much storm a leaf can take, violently pulled away from the branch it has always known as home,
until it lets go, gives up, and follows the current.

There are other leaves out t
I don't have a father.
He is not dead.
He is very well alive. I have his number, his address, and I can talk to him at any moment.
He did not completely abandon my family and disappear.
I met him. I visit him
Often.
But when I think of the word "father," I don't think of him.
I have a step-dad.
A man who respects and supports me in every way, more than my biological father could ever dream of. He is proud of who I am, and proud to call me his daughter.
But when I think of the word "father," I don't think of him.
I have a boss.
When I was 18, he took me under his wing to help finance and support my education, giving me my first officia

"Out there in the Desert"
I always wondered like everyone else.
Everyone wonders about stuff. Even after you've grown up, there's still always stuff that you wish you could know . . . secrets. It might not necessarily be Santa Claus anymore, but you'll always want to know things. It's something in human nature, along with its counterpart truth: there are always going be things being kept from you.
Sometimes, you get to find out things. You catch the unguarded whisper, or knowing becomes part of your job. Most of the time though, you're gonna find out whatever secrets you get told are a lot less exiting
